This has to be the most FAQ on the chat room, so here it is. These notations are essential to learn becuase not all discussion boards, chat rooms, voice chat ect... have access to emoticons : :f+p :1 :2 :3 . These can also be use verbally, saying the number "one" is faster then saying "down back". It's also faster to type out the number "1" instead of going through the emoticon list. Hope this helps you understand the notations.

Directional Notations

1 : down+back
2 : down
3 : down+forward
4 : back
5 : neutral
6 : forward
7 : up+back
8 : up
9 : up+forward

An easier way to remember is by looking at your number pad on your keyboard(don't get confused with your mobile phone device as work the other way around). Most computer/laptop keyboard number pads should have arrows printed under the numbers. So take the time to remember those number and match them to the corresponding arrows. If your keyboard is not labeled with arrows here is what the numbers should correspond to on your keyboard.

7 8 9 :7 :8 :9
4 5 6 :4 :5 :6
1 2 3 :1 :2 :3

By adding square brackets around the number you are holding down the command.

[7] [8] [9] :7h :8h :9h
[4] [5] [6] :4h :5h :6h
[1] [2] [3] :1h :2h :3h

We also have unique directional notations for common long commands. However these are optional to use but they come in hardy for long commands such as 41236.

qcb : quarter circle back, this is equivalent to 214
qcf : quarter circle forward, this is equivalent to 236
hcb : half circle back, this is equivalent to 63214
hcf : half circle forward, this is equivalent to 41236

Command Notations

p : Punch
k : Kick
f : Free
h : Hold, Guard
p+k : Fierce Punch/Secondary Punch
f+k : Fierce Kick/Secondary Kick
f+p : Throw

p : :p
k : :k
f : :f
h : :h
p+k : :p+k
f+k : :f+k
f+p : :f+p

Thanks for explaining this :) I would have never known what "~" stood for if you didn't.

Why do you have a free and a hold?

I personally never use :h but some players like to use :h over :f , it's an optional thing.
Also Hayashi decided to bring back the :h in DOAD, so who knows he might favor that instead of :f for future installments.

After I made that post, I realized that DOA1 doesn't have a "hold" button and that the "free" button wasn't introduced until DOA2. Carry on. =P

DOA1 doesn't have a "hold" button

Really :o I don't know about the US version but the JP version of DOA1 I own uses :h to represent hold.

I've also added abbreviation to the FAQ, will update if I come across a new abbreviation I've never head before ^_^
Feel free to add term abbreviation to the list ( don't make them up & make sure it's relevant to DOA ). I believe there are no abbreviations for the more technical terms like : Ground Bounce, Frame Trap, Tech Crouch, Stagger Timing, Instant Recovery ect...

LS - Limbo Stun
SS - Side Step
FSD - Free Step Dodge
WS - While Standing
WC - While Crouching
OTG - On The Ground
Oki - Okizeme
BT - Back Turned
KB - Knock Back
SE - Slow Escape
DS - Defensive Switch
DH - Defensive Hold
OH - Offensive Hold
HC - High Cruch
MC - Medium Crush
LC - Low Crush
GS - Guard Stun
GB - Guard Break
GC - Guard Crush
NH - Normal Hit
KBD - Korean Back Dash
BDC - Back Dash Cancel

Other stuff

i - Startup frame

ex: Kasumi's basic jab is 9i

-/+ - Recovery Frames ( Disadvantage / Advantage )

disadvantage ex : -12 on block
advantage ex : +3 on block

, - Followed by

BKO - Helena's unique stance
DF - Christie's unique stance

I think in DOA1 in the console ports you had to set one button as the grab by setting :p :+ :f to one button, but there was no button called H. In the arcade you had to press the two seperate buttons at the same time.

Also, I was thinking, wouldnt it be beneficial to have specific emotes for QCF (:2 :3 :6) or half circles or 360s? If possible, that'd be nice rather than seeing long streams of arrows (especially when it comes to some of the grab combos).

Oh I think I know what the confusion was all about... I wrote :h = hold.
should have been... :h = hold, guard. this way it works for both DOA and DOAD

My bad ^_^

@ onichi, F and H do the same thing, just named differently. Also when I played DOAD I don't think they used the :f symbol as guard/hold. They used :h to represent hold/guard. Soz if I get this wrong I haven't played the game in so long xD

I also added QCF QCB HCF HCB :qcf :qcb :hcf :hcb
